Robert Schumacher to Discuss User-Centered Design for Healthcare Technology at the 2011 CHI Conference

May 5, 2011

User Centric Managing Director Robert Schumacher, Ph.D. is invited to panel two small interest groups (SIG) at the CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI2011), in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Schumacher will be among other leaders in user experience and healthcare. The panel, titled “Designing for Whole Systems and Services in Healthcare,” will discuss research issues across healthcare practitioner communities, specifically user-centered design for healthcare innovations. The second SIG, "Managing UX Teams" will share the results from a two-day CHI workshop, and serve as a forum for the management community to discuss global user experience management.

Schumacher has been actively involved designing and evaluating usability criteria for EHR systems, is currently engaged in a grant with NIST on the development of a usability evaluation program, and is active in the HIMSS Usability Taskforce as well as other professional societies.  He most recently co-authored the NIST Guide to the Processes Approach for Improving the Usability of Electronic Health Records. Dr. Schumacher holds a PhD in Cognitive and Experimental Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Most recently, Schumacher spoke at the Fourth Annual Healthcare Informatics Symposium on April 29, 2011.

Abstract

This CHI 2011 SIG provides a workshop for collective problem finding and community identification. The goal is to initiate a working group to coordinate systemic design research issues across practitioner communities. This SIG addresses the insufficiency of user-centered design and informatics research to design for system and service-level innovations in healthcare. The SIG seeks to coordinate communications and participation across design practice, research disciplines, and areas of health practice for service system innovation.

About CHI

Originally a small conference for psychologists interested in user interface design, the annual CHI conference has grown to include a very diverse participant group (such as interaction designers, computer scientists, engineering psychologists, developers, performing artists, and more), and to deal with larger problems such as the organizational integration of technology. This year’s conference marks 29 years of research, innovation and development in the field of Human-Computer Interaction and is expected to draw more than 2500 professionals from over 40 countries. CHI 2011 offers provocative opportunities for connecting and interacting with future technologies. Visit http://chi2011.org for more information on this year's conference.
