Usability Experts Discuss User Experience in Health IT

User Centric, Inc. will be hosting a full-day seminar on Health Information Technology (HIT) Usability on September 3, 2009 at the University of Chicago’s Gleacher Center. “Learn How to Improve the User Experience in Health IT” (http://www.hit-usability.com), led by usability expert Robert Schumacher, PhD, will discuss techniques and answer questions surrounding usability as it relates to HIT. 

Lately, the healthcare industry has seen a surge of interest in the topic of usability and ways to improve the user experience for users of health IT. The requirement of “meaningful use” noted in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has sparked numerous debates over the definition of the term. Upon the release of the definition of “meaningful use”, HIT will need to evolve to improve the user experience, but how? Through usability research and testing, HIT usability can be improved and adoption can be increased. “Learn How to Improve the User Experience in Health IT” will explain what HIT Usability is, how it can be measured and improved, and tools and resources necessary to make improvements.

Specific topics to be discussed include fundamentals of measuring user experience, how to incorporate usability into HIT development, the value of usability, fundamentals of clinician-centered design, clinical issues and examples, and HIT success stories. Accompanying Schumacher will be leading usability expert Gavin Lew, healthcare usability expert Wendy Yee, PhD and healthcare informatics specialist Shelley Myers, RN, MS, CPHIMS.
